Chords of life: the story of one gift and the realization of a cherished dream.

We continue to share with you the stories of our heroes – patients of the hematological oncology department of the children’s hospital.
Dmytro Furtak from the Ternopil region is next. His story is also closely related to our company. Together, we helped with the purchase of medicines for the department and closing the necessary requests. This time, our colleagues helped the boy make his dream come true and bring some joy and hope into his life, which is full of daily struggle with the disease.
Dima was supposed to celebrate his 18th birthday with family and friends, but met that day, unfortunately, in the hospital. And now he is being treated here for 5 months.
“I was supposed to go to work, but suddenly I got a fever and during the examination, a tumor was found. Then I got here (in the department) and I was already stuck here for a long time. I met my 18th birthday right here. A birthday in the oncology ward sounds sad. And now I perfectly understand – one should always be careful with plans.”
Of course, during such a long and serious treatment, both the physical resources of the body and moral strength are extremely needed to maintain one’s fighting spirit and prepare for a speedy recovery.
“The mood changes quickly. What supports?…Nurses and staff, and the food my mother cooks gives a feeling of home comfort. Of course, friends are supportive, and it helps a lot when they call you and just talk to you.”
And now the most interesting part begins, as they say, there are simply no coincidences in life.
Dmytro had a desire to learn to play the guitar in order to find peace and inspiration in music, strength for further treatment. And then, of course, play with friends and family. And quite by chance, in a conversation with one of our employees, it turned out that it is possible to help him with this desire.
Serhiy Zosymenko, our magician and volunteer, quickly contributed to the implementation and handed over the desired instrument to Dmytro.
This guitar also has its own story. According to its previous owner, he bought it at a charity musical evening organized in support of our defenders. Of course, there were charity auctions, all funds from which went to the necessary requests from the brigade. Musicians also performed, and our colleague took part in the performance, and then also bought the same guitar from the musicians. But, since he already had an instrument at home, on which he usually plays, he decided to present this guitar to someone who had dreamed of it for a long time, but could not afford to buy it.
Dmytro was very happy, because now he has his own instrument, which he is now actively learning to play. In general, Dima is a very cheerful and inquisitive boy, has many interests, and is always open to new and interesting things.
“Doctors say that whoever is in the ward with me always talks. I play games on the tablet, I play the guitar, I can dance the polka with my mother even at midnight, this also helps me a lot. My sister taught me to dance polka, and here I continue to practice a little bit so as not to lose my skills. When I got the guitar, another new interesting hobby appeared and it is what keeps me afloat now. I’m learning to play the guitar on YouTube. I’m already going through the chords, but I haven’t learned the songs yet. The guitar is very distracting from chemotherapy…”
Music not only calms and distracts, it gives inspiration and zest for life, and for Dmytro, it became a new stage, another small step into the future, a happy future, without illness, trials and fears.
“I already have a profession as a welder, a plumber, and I want to continue working with my hands. I have no permanent plans for the future, I live one day at a time. When everything ends, as soon as I recover, I want to apply for a driving license. Currently I’m studying remotely at a driving school. And in general, I want to try a little bit of everything in life.”
“My attitude towards time has changed, I treat it very responsibly now. Now I started to take everything much more seriously. I could not even imagine how cancer can change the perception of the world. I will never forget the department, strangely enough, there are a lot of pleasant memories here and it is here that an important part of my life takes place, which changed me forever. Now I really want sunshine and summer, and for now I’m learning to play the guitar”
It would seem like a simple thing, but it helps someone find lost hope, inspires and gives confidence and hope for the best.
We are sincerely grateful to everyone who made this dream a reality. Thank you to those who constantly help children with cancer, take care of them and support them.
